I took the swamp tour of the Wambaw creek up near McClellandville. The tour was really really cool. I would highly recommend it to anyone - period. We went mid-March which isn't the best time to go, but we had no choice. None-the-less we saw several alligators, turtles, an owl, a waterbird. Don't worry... it's TOTALLY safe.
Our guide Teresa was extremely knowledgeable of the environment. She provided a great understanding into the ecosystem of the swamp from the water, to the animals and everything in between.
The great thing is you don't have to be a kayak expert or anything to enjoy this trip. She provided directions on paddling and maneuvering. The creek is pretty slow moving so getting out there and enjoying it is soooOOOoooo easy.
About the only (and very small) thing was the raving on about saving the environment and creatures, which is very good thing, but of course a symptom of a bigger problem. Saving creatures won't stop a husband from cheating on his wife, or a teenager from messing up their life with drugs.
It is about 40 minutes North of Charleston, a little closer from the Mt. Pleasant area. The road from the highway into the forest is a little tough, in fact, it's the toughest part of the trip. It's a hardened dirt road with potholes so drive slowly and you'll be fine. Again, I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who loves adventure and wants to see some amazing scenery without a lot of effort.
